Judges records the transition of Israel from a scattered collection of tribes caught in a cycle of sin and redemption, but where each iteration of that cycle brings them closer to social and institutional chaos. In spite of the victories under the leadership of heros like Barak and the prophetess Deborah, Israel discovers that if they are to survive, they have to leave behind their “frontier days” and grow up into a sophisticated nation complete with something Israel has never had before: a human king.
